This little piggy...

I have the perfect book for all fashionista mommys or mommys to be!

This Little Piggy went to Prada: Nursery Rhymes for the Blahnik Brigade is the perfect nursery rhyme collection for any fashionable mom! The author, Amy Allen rewrites classic nursery rhymes into name dropping poems in such a witty and stylish manner, that it will make most diaper changing, sleep deprived new moms chuckle!
Here is an example:
"Twinkle, twinkle, diamond ring, in a blue box tied with string".
The book is filled from cover to cover with colorful illustrations and bound in super-chic hot pink and brown.
Amy Allen was born to Hong Kong parents in the U.K. but lived in Singapore for years, where she was named one of Singapore's most stylish women! The book is a must have on every baby shower list in both Singapore and the U.K!

"The must-have accessory for the Birkin-toting and Blahnik-wearing yummy mummy."
Harpers Bazaar
"Nursery rhymes have never been so fashionable...can any mother resist its name dropping charms?"

Black Friday

Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving is the official kickoff to the holiday shopping season. Before modern accounting practices came about, retailers would mark their losses in red and gains in black. Retailers report some of their highest earnings of the year on that day, hence the name "Black"Friday.

Check out www.theblackfriday.com for black friday deals from retails such as:
Macy's
Target
Old Navy
The Disney Store
Carters
Polo Ralph Lauren
Tommy Hilfiger
Build A Bear
Ikea
Just to name a few!

A few tips for Black Friday-
1. Narrow down the stores you want to hit. With traffic and crowds you are not going to be able to hit a lot...Prioritize!
2. Have a big breakfast or lunch...shopping like this will take lots of energy!
3. Bring water with you...you will get thirsty
4. shop ONLINE...avoid the madness and shop in the comforts of your own home!

Save time and check out the ads on www.theblackfriday.com before you hit the mall and the crowds!!
You may be able to save time shopping and enjoy your family this weekend instead!
Happy Shopping!

Gifts for the men in our lives..

I have such a hard time holiday shopping for my husband every year! Unlike me, he really doesn't want anything in particular. I have found the best thing to do for men (at least mine) is to upgrade what he already has. I feel like I am constantly upgrading for myself, and he never does! The holidays are a perfect time of year to upgrade for him!

Here is a list of some great "upgrades" for the men in our lives ranging from $12.00 to $150.00:

Bull Dog Bottle opener from Pottery Barn $12-
Let him hang this adorable bull dog next to your entertainment area, and he will never lose another bottle opener!

Stainless Steel Cocktail Shaker from Pottery Barn $39-
For the martini lover in your life, add a bottle of his favorite vodka and this makes the perfect gift!

Dorset Brandy Glasses from Williams Sonoma $56 for 2-
Brandy lover in your life? A set of brandy snifters and a good cigar and you are all set!

Grilling Tools from Williams Sonoma $79.95-
This is my husband's personal favorite! If your husband is a grill master, this is the perfect gift! For an additional $20.00 get them monogrammed!

Fushion Chrome Collection from The Art of Shaving $150-
4 elements included to achieve the perfect shave: Pre shave, shaving cream, after shave and shaving brush, in addition to the Gillette fusion razor.

I hope this makes shopping for your man a bit easier this year!

Elizabeth Hasselbeck for Dialogue

Before she became a co host on the View and a contestant on Survivor, Elizabeth Hasselbeck was a designer.  She made her Fashion Week debut back in February and is now selling her hot new line on QVC. The pretty and polished separates are classic yet chic, and perfect for the holidays! Ranging from $32.00- $109.00, this line is very affordable. These are a few of my favorite pieces.

Stretch Velvet Sleeveless Top- $38.50
With the large mesh bow this top is perfect for any holiday celebration.

Cowl Neck Knit Top-$41.00
The pleating around the waist, sleeves and wrist give this top eye popping detail!

Textured Bolero Jacket-$70.00
The belled elbow length sleeves make this jacket ultra feminine. The one oversized button gives the jacket a chic flyaway effect. Perfect for the holiday season.

Georgette Empire Waist Tunic-$28.92
This is my personal favorite. It is a very versatile piece and the price is amazing! Wear with leggings or tights, with flats or boots, and look very in style this season!

So, whether you agree with her politics or not, I think we can all agree that Elizabeth Hasselbeck is a great designer!

The Snood...

Remember my post last week about the infinity scarfs? Well, some retailers are marketing the infinity scarf as a "snood" and showing a whole new approach to wearing it!
Bloomingdale's told customers to "make sure they are seen in this lavish new accessory".

A "snood" is a cross between a hood and a scarf, and when worn properly resembles a babushka!
The snood dates back to the 1940's when women wore them to keep their long hair out of the way. In the 50's they showed up on the ski slopes, and most recently they appeared on the fall runway in plaids, fur, and colorful prints. Wrap your circle scarf around your neck a few times and throw the rest up over your head!

Just another fun, chic way to keep warm this winter!

Here are a few additional places to find infinity scarves or Snoods!

American Apparel- $28
Solid color scarf in multiple materials.

The Limited-$39.50
Chunky Knit scarf in 12 bright colors.

fashionable food

Once a week, over the next 2 months, I thought I would give you some great gift ideas, for all of those extra special people in your life!

I think this book is the perfect way to kick off my gift giving advice!
The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) convinced more than 100 top designers to hand over their favorite recipes along with a sketch representing the dish, in order to create a cookbook full of designer delectables!
The book is kind of a cross between a cook book and an art book, perfect to display in the kitchen or on a coffee table!
From Zac Posen's Butterscotch Wafers to Tory Burch's Gazpacho, to Isaac Mizrahi's Mushroom truffle spaghetti, there is a chic recipe for all taste buds! With a forward by Martha Stewart, this book is full of color, flavor and personality, and perfect for the fashionista cook on your list!
If you are the fashionista chef...print this entry and slip it under your hubby's pillow...hint hint!!

sock it to ya...

Knee socks were all over the fall runways, and in every fashion magazine! They are a chic way to keep warm this winter and can be worn with flat boots, heels, ankle boots, almost anything! Knee socks are an inexpensive, instant update to your look! Depending on how you wear them, you can pull off several different looks.

Here are a few that I found from J.Crew. I like the way they pull off this trend in a classy, yet a little bit sexy way!

These thigh high socks are made from merino wool with a hint of stretch for $18.50. I love these with ankle boots as shown, or with a knee high flat boot! If worn with a knee high boot, make sure the socks come out over the top of the boot, for a very edgy, sexy look. For a slimming effect pair the same color socks and boots (example black socks with black boots).

I like this pair from Top Shop. The texture and purple hue give them a little dressier feel, perfect for the holidays! $14 at www.topshop.com

For additional knee socks check out these great deals:
www.foottraffic.com- 3 for $25.00
www.hue.com- 3 for $13.50

Have fun with this trend and as always do not be afraid to try it!!

I think many moms have this perception that the "mall" photography studios are no good!
Well, I am here to tell you, that is not the case! I am a mom totally obsessed with pictures! I take a lot of them on my own, and also had a professional come to our home when my son was a newborn to get some "baby" shots.  Although I love the pictures that I take, I like having the professional pictures to hang in our home. Unfortunately, with the economy the way it is, spending $600.00 on a session and photos is just not in the budget... when I want new pictures every couple of months!
I discovered Picture People, when my son Ethan was 4 months old, and we have been using them every other month since then!
They are located in malls across the country. Check out the website: www.picturepeople.com to locate one near you!

This is why I like them:

  • No Sitting fees EVER
  • Pictures are ready in about an hour (sometimes longer sometimes less)
  • 100% satisfaction guarantee
Now, the key to achieving really cool photos and not cheesy "mall" photos is:
  • keep it simple- no props (or just one)
  • tell the photographer exactly what you want them to capture:
    • head shot
    • toddler walking shot
    • baby sitting up or crawling
  • Utilize their really cool photo effects(get creative moms!):
    • Black and white
    • Sepia- brown tone
    • Retro- faded color (my personal fave)
Each sheet costs $18.00 and includes:
  • 1 8x10 or 2 5x7's or 5 4x6's or 8 wallets
You can also have them frame the photos for you, however I suggest going to Michael's and buying a ready made frame! You will save so much money!!

They offer great discounts at certain times of the year. Right now they are offering 25% off on their website, and some holiday incentives as well!

Check out Picture People soon, I promise you will not be disappointed, if you take my advice!

practical but fashionable...

Are you like me, getting tired of carrying a big diaper bag around??!
I came up with a fun, fashionable way, to carry your diapers and wipes with out having to lug around the big bag all of the time!
The Vera Bradley large cosmetic bag is my solution! It is the perfect size to hold a travel wipe container and multiple diapers, with room to spare! It is lined in plastic, and has a grab and go loop handle! I bought one this weekend for $24, and it is already worth every penny!
SO, If you do not want to carry a huge bag any longer just to cart around diapers and wipes, grab a Vera Bradley large cosmetic bag!!

hot head..

I have some great hair advice that I thought I would pass along. I am always trying to achieve the perfect "blow out" on my own!
Now that the weather is getting cold, we really can not afford to "air dry" our tresses any longer, without the fear of getting sick (H1N1 stay away)!!
I know as moms, that we do not have a ton of time to style our hair. But if we just take 10-15 minutes a day to give it a good blow out...it will last for a few days.
I recently found some good advice for when you are giving yourself a "blow out", it not only helps save your hair from the heat, but gives it a ton of volume too!

Oscar Blandi, one of the most sought after hair stylists in Hollywood, suggests the following when blowing out your hair:

  • Use the cool setting on your dryer until most of your hair is dry, then use the hot setting to style with a round brush. This will save your hair from drying out!
  • Dry most of your hair upside down on the cool setting, then once it is almost dry lift your head up and style with round brush on hot.

I tried this advice, and it works, and it really did not take much longer either!
Save your hair and give it a try!
